#BehindTheScenes

Development

The four members of Something Random (Art Director Martyn Gill, Project Lead Wojciech Dziedzic, Project Lead Marcin Jóźwik and the Audio Guy Kostek Antonowicz) got together to participate in Global Game Jam and blew off some steam after releasing Toy Trains a few weeks earlier.

The game jam's theme was "Make Me Laugh".

A few topics orbited around our heads when we have started to come up with the concept:

  1. An inverted classic gameplay - a game of pool when you need to deal with the black ball first, bowling but you avoid all the pins.
  2. The contradictory expectations - games like A Firm Handshake or What The Golf that change the game's vocabulary as the game progresses, leading to constant surprises.
  3. Disneyland Ride - the feeling of continuity, playing with pacing of a continuous experience.
  4. Song Game - an interactive experience resembling a music video and lasting only for the duration of the song.

Those initial thoughts led to a game called Super Bowling 3000. The game introduces itself to the player as a typical, a little bit clunky bowling game, only to turn into a continous journey through weirder and weirder worlds, each somehow reimagining the game of bowling.

The game ends by making a full loop, returning to the real bowling as if nothing has happened, hiding the ball's journey away from the outsiders eyes.

We had so much fun while doing this game with the liberation of not polishing, doing it dirty and just accepting how things turned out to be. A beautiful relaxation after polishing every aspect of Toy Trains just two weeks before.
